API Keys vs Subscriptions
Many people confuse their ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro subscription with API access. They are completely separate things.
What's the Difference?
| Subscription (ChatGPT Plus / Claude Pro) | API Key | |
|---|---|---|
| Used in | Their own chat apps | External tools like AIDO |
| Pricing | Fixed monthly fee ($20/month) | Pay only for what you use |
| Access | Chat interface only | Programmable access for any app |
| Account | Consumer account | Developer/API account (separate) |

How Much Does API Access Cost?
API pricing is based on usage — you pay for what you use. For a typical personal assistant, costs are usually very low (a few cents to a few dollars per month depending on how much you chat).
Both OpenAI and Anthropic require you to add a payment method to your API account. You can set spending limits to stay in control.
Do I Need a Subscription Too?
No. For AIDO, you only need an API key. You do not need a ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro subscription. A free account on the API platform is enough — you just need to add a payment method for usage billing.
